piano teaching rates

Is $100 a month a reasonable rate to drive to students homes for a 1/2 hour lesson each week?

Where I live that's definitely reasonable, but it depends.
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Although I don't drive to student's houses, if I was going to,
I think the fairest way is to already know how much you want for your teaching and then And factor in how long it takes to get there and back.
If it took me a haf hour - I would charge a half hour for driving, and add that on to my teaching cost.    You are doing a very special service, in my opinion to drive there.  Not too many businesses do that, so people have to know
If it took me ten minutes, adjust it fairly. That's what I would do anyway.  I wonder what most people do.
This is especially nice for mothers with a lot of kids - it saves them a lot of trips - and gives them time to get other things done.  On the other hand, you probably have a better chance of teaching more students in the same house, so I would be sure to make my fee work for me.

I agree with Key of C it definately depends on where you live too with the price of teaching.  I've heard of people teaching for anything from 5 bucks an hour to almost 60 (probably more) here at the forum.

My first piano teacher charged $15/ half hour; my second charged $100/hr.  Anywhere in there, depending on your qualifications.  Of course, driving to a student's house is much beyond the call of duty, and so you should charge them a fee on top of the hourly rate for it.

Best,
Michael

Don't know much about this.  I have taught for years.  I have felt that music lessons should be available to everyone, and no one should be excluded because of lack of finances.  I charge $10 a lesson, half hour.  I go over that time sometimes if we are having a good time.  My goal is to help anyone who wants to learn to love music the way I do.  Some say that I undercharge, maybe I do.  I think the going rate here is more like $20, but that's just rumor.

I charge $12/half hour during the summer..just went up from $10/half hour.  It is definitely no fun printing up new contracts and telling everyone "my rates are going up in June"...so charge what you want/are worth right away and don't worry about it!  During the school year I charge a monthly fee of $45 and don't do makeups..am really looking forward to this.
