Decent to "the best" uprights
on: April 29, 2006, 05:49:35 PM
What are some good upright manufacturers?  What is the best in uprights?

And how much would those cost?

I was just wondering about this.  I may not be remembering this correctly, but I think I played on a $10,000 upright that played very nicely and was better than many "standard" grands I played on.

For top range uprights, I would say Sauter, Steingraeber and Ibach have impressed me the both, though all have different characteristics - Sauter being more "powerful" in tone and "meaty" in touch, while Ibach very delicate, very "light", both in action and tone. I have not tried Bechstein and Bluthner uprights, but from everything I've heard, they are excellent instruments as well

Just my opinion you understand ------------

If a manufacturer has $10,000 retail price range to work with, why put that kind of money into an upright?

I believe a grand is better designed to project sound out into a room.  An upright has a sound board that is on the back of the instrument, and that sound board is pushed up a few inches from a wall.  In addition, many uprights are not easy to open up, which means the sound is confined inside an enclosed cabinet.

There is nothing wrong with uprights.  I play a very good one at my lesson.  There is nothing wrong with Four Roses either, but I would rather have John Jamison.

If a person can afford a grand, and has space for a grand, why not get one?  Why buy the world's most expensive upright?

Maybe I have misunderstood your question -- and if so, apologies.

Dont buy a steinway upright. They plays very nice but i could hear it become it false during playing it for a musical. I experienced this multiple times on an upright Steinway.

Really?
What kind of model was it?

Hamburg or NYC?

It's hard to believe...
