Performer battle of the sexes
on: May 03, 2006, 08:12:02 AM
I was thinking - does anyone agree that there is a ceratin tendency for males and females to play particular composers?
Women generally tend to stick to Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Chopin whilst men play..trying not to sound sexist but a broader repertoire - Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Bartok etc. (as well as Bach, Mozart etc.)
There aren't too many 'great' women pianists that tackle the 'heavier' composers (sound-wise).  I don't know if this is becuase of strength (although my teacher can play louder than me so probably not).
The only one I can think of is Argerich.  I maybe totally wrong but it was just a thought.  And i'm referring only to world class pianists as students would learn everything obviously.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

I can think of people like olga kern, idil biret, elena kuschnerova (eugh), but it does seem like its a male dominated society  ::)

There are several world class female pianists that play a wide range of composers.. it's just that the most famous ones (apart from Argerich) are men

thats what i think anyway

a female pianist to add to the list anyway- Noriko Ogawa; her Debussy has a greater scale of dynamics than any other recording i've heard, and in her recording of the third Rachmaninoff concerto she opts for the alternative, "heavier" cadenza and pulls it off beautifully- she also plays a lot of uncommon composers that most people have never heard of

There's also the other Noriko - Kawai. Then there is (or was) Joanna MacGregor, Yvonne Loriod, Alicia de Larrocha, Tatyana Nikolayeva, Donna Amato, Seta Tanyel, Angela Hewitt, Marilyn Nonken, Hélène Grimaud (who's surely already had a fair bit of exposure of one kind or another on this forum), Sarah Nicolls, Maria João Pires, Ursula Oppens - and I doubt that any of these (about none of whom any value judgements should be assumed from my citation of them here) - or indeed any others who've yet to be mentioned in this thread - is involved in sexual battles with competing male pianists...

Yes, I have no doubt of that; what a shame, then, that only one of them is suitably dead...

Angela Hewitt's specialty is Bach and RACHMANINOFF
She said so herself.
She is phenomenal.
