The pianist from Muse is classically trained (in the proper sense of the word) without a shadow of a doubt. Furthermore I believe he must have a deep - and possibly ongoing -  interest in the classical and romantic piano repertoire. Have a listen to "Butterflies and Hurricanes." You'll see what I mean.

Wow I heard quite a bunch of muse but have not heard all and did not expect this. The piano break at 3:20-ish is really cool for a band as popular as this!

dont think so, i think he plays by ear, his 'improvised' live perfomrances of random campanella and rach preludeincsharpminor suggest otherwise

I'm glad that the article mentions Tori Amos.  Obviously, she was a prodigy, but do you hear Peabody when she plays?  I'm not saying you don't, because I am not not sure what the #3!! Peabody is!

I guess what I am asking is this:  If you want to play pop music, should you study classical at all?

Vitalij Kuprij used be a very promising classical pianist untill he started to drink and play powermetal

Jordan Rudess in Dream Theater used to  be a classical prodigy too.

No one can blame him for switching to progmetal keyboard since it´s actually really fun to improvise with a pitchbend.

Try it and you may get possesed by it.

Record a simple chord progression on the sequencer and improvise over it and you feel that you can´t stop doing it.
