Saw recently that they have confirmed the authenticity of the Erard piano used in the famous duel.  The receipt for the piano indicated it was sold to Mme princess Christina de Belgiojoso for 5,000 francs (about $450,000.00 in today's figures).  Now that would be a conversation piece!

If my failing memory serves me correctly, they played some 2 piano pieces in the duel, so i guess there must be another one.

Who won the duel?

The Princess, who hosted the event, is attributed with the famous quote:  "Thalberg is the first great pianist of the world, but Liszt is the only one."    Of course, it would be Liszt who would be the most enduring of the two because of his compositions, numerous famous students and legions of admirers.

How would they judge between them when they're playing a 2piano piece? Or would they judge them for how they play with eachother? If they were intensely competing, the piece would sound horrible with expressions here and there, and speed ups to show virtuosity etc.

How did Thalberg feel when Liszt was crowned the winner?

Who won the duel?
If anyone really won, it was Belgiojoso. She became Paris's most vaunted salonniere after bagging that long-awaited event.

They played a Fantasia each (Liszt's Niobe and Thalberg's Moses). Maybe they just used the same piano?
