Back ache
on: May 20, 2006, 03:50:15 PM
Hi,

I don't remember getting this before but lately I have been getting back ache from sitting at the piano.

I try to sit as straight as possible but I get an ache in my spine quite high up in the spine directly behind the sternum - at the point where the rib cage and spine join. No matter how straight I sit or how I position myself I always get this ache lately.

Any ideas?

Pay close attention to your shoulders.  Are they as relaxed as possible?

I'd check the shoulders too. But another thing when people are told to sit straight up as possible they generally dont sit up right, they arch their back too much,  which in could lead to some back aches if held for a long time.

Your back problems may not necessarily be piano related, but are simply more apparent when you sit straight and use your back for support for long periods of time. At one point I had this problem when I carried all my books to school and walked home with them, after I started doing my homework at school and leaving them there my problem was gone, so it wasn't due to my piano posture.

However, the other members have given excellent advice as well.

Hi!
I agree with the above, plus try using a chair with a back...hmm, how do say that in english...a normal chair!
I always get ache if I sit on a piano stool for more than 30 mins. I even use a chair at concert performances.

Piano Street Magazine:
Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
