Recommend some pieces please
on: May 22, 2006, 07:57:51 PM

I've developed a real taste for a certain style of piece, and I was hoping I might be able to get a few recommendations. Preferably for both piano and orchestra if possible.

The type of thing Im after is like Rachmaninoff's Op16 No3, Op23 No4 etc. You know, those smooth slow pieces with loads of nice extended chords.

Thanks y'all, you are all officially on my Christmas card list ( ;D)

^^ not helpful  ;D

How about some Chopin Noctures and Preludes?  Most are slow, beautiful, and very nice.
Nocture Op. 72 No. 1 (the E-minor one) is a heartbreaker, easy to play, lots of chords, though it's more melodic than chordal in some parts.

Rachmaninov's Elegy Op. 3 No. 1 is very nice, lots of chords with arpeggeated accompaniment.

Rach 2  ;).
Saint-Saens g minor concerto if you like! Rachmaninoff Preludes perhaps.  I like chopin.  Hmm...  Chopin prelude in c minor is a beatiful piece around grade 3 I believe  ;D ;D ;D
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Yeah, Im familiar with the Chopin Preludes and Nocturnes. Very nice pieces. At the moment Im doing quite a bit of Chopin actually:

- Nocturne Op9 No2
- Waltz Op69 No1 and No2 (love these ones!)
- Preludes 4, 6, 7, 9, 15, 20

Thing is, these pieces have their own sound imo, not like the Rachmaninov at all. Rach seems to like using the minor 9th's quite a bit, and he moves the upper voices around in thirds (like in Op16 No3). This is the sound Im after. Its a more modern sound, reminds me of the some of the smoother jazz tunes.

The concerto's 2 and 3 have their moments in this style. The second theme in the first movement of 2 is a big favorite of mine (pity its to difficult for me to play!).

Will be sure to check out the Saint Saens and Rach Elegy. Thanks for the suggestions  :)

Steve, have you considered the nocturnes of Faure, the barber nocturne. some of the slow lyrical Preludes of Debussy either book 1 or 2.  Or the Faure Ballade.

Can be solo piano, concerto or full orchestra. Im not fussy eitherway, I just like this music and would love to hear some more of it.

Infact, Id be especially interested in hearing some full orchestral music in this style.

If I think you're referring to jazz harmony (lots of extended/substituted chords) in a classical mould, I don't think there are too many.
Chopin nocturne op.48 no.1 cmin uses lot's of min7ths, 9ths, 11ths.
Scriabin...something - 4th sonata maybe but the second mov. isn't slow.
Poulenc from what i've heard uses extended harmony but I can't reccomend anything coz i'm not familiar enough.
Ravel - Gmaj concerto slow movt. (or 1st mov. for blues notes but again, not slow)
Gershwin - preludes.  the second is a blues lullaby.  the Fmaj, concerto slow movt is nice.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

You've probably heard these given your examples but the Rach Prel 23/6 and and Scriabin Poeme 32/1 are some pieces that come to mind.

Great stuff, plenty to get into there! Then Chopin Nocturne has its moments, there is prog of 5th's bit that sounds a little like what Im after. Nice piece!

Im actually liking the 3rd Mvt of his 3rd Sonata. This is a great piece imo.
