why such hate?
Anyways I've been playing the guitar for about 9 years now and it not easy to pick up for beginners, press a few keys in the right order on piano and voila a melody, while on guitar you need a little more work before you are able to do that. For rock guitar the entire Troy Stetina series are very useful, also visit this site
www.ibreathemusic.com and check out all the articles (some can be intimidating for a beginner just start with the basic ones and not sweeping picking or string skipping

). And just with piano it is important to know what kind of music you want to play, and work towards playing it. Besides that, recording yourself is very useful because the guitar can be a real 'noisy' instrument in the hands of less experienced players. Listen critically and eliminate all string noise using your 2 hands (palm of your picking hand, and index finger on your fretting hand).
For getting in a band, all you need is to be able to play tight chord progressions. Then start practicing and give the lead guitarist a run for his/er money. Also learn the pentatonic scale in all positions and start doing some improvising asap, doesn't get more fun than that.
