An interesting article on Evgeny Kissin
on: November 13, 2001, 01:26:09 PM
It's called "Lonely at the Top" and you can read it here:
https://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kcrw/arts/music/classical/article/257.html
It asks a question that I've been mulling over in my mind for years: Why the hell are critics so damn hard on him?

Kissen is a legend I think that's obvious his 1984 concert when he was twelve.... Chopin concertos 1 and 2 straight of with 3 encores....
He's a very powerful pianist but his interpretation leaves a bit to be desired in my opinion, I saw him play the Pictures and it was really quite poor. But then everyone is after Horowitz! Still he's better than me! So far...

yea
i think if he would just change his hairstyle, maybe the critics won't be so harsh on him
but still, some of his recording are dissapointing.(close to amost 50% of his recordings is bad interpretation, but other 50% may sometimes be legendary.)
I have listnede to his Rach3, i have to say that's the worst version of rach3 i've ever heard.

He has a very weird way of bowing infront of an audience, the hair just makes it more funny.
I have to agree with his interpretations. I have heard only 1 or 2 of the lets say 10 recordings of which I can say I liked. Most of the time I get really bored listening to Kissin.

I think he's never relaxed.
Even when he doesn't play... and I don't like that.
Kissin listen me:
The perfect pianist doesn't exist !
Be at ease...Live in peace...
But I admire you.

How many actually can play like Kissin? And how many of you actually went and saw him live? Or are you basing your opinions from just watching him on TV? And also do you also have the guts to get up on that stage and play in front of thousands of people several nights every week all year round? Probably not very many. I sure can't.
I met him before and spoke with him and even took pictures with him because we had (she passed away) a mutual aquaintance whom she knew Kissin since when he was kindergarten. He is just like any one of us, a regular Joe who has an amazing talent.
And I did hear him live when he toured Japan 3 years ago playing the Pictures at an Exhibition and it was the best performance of this work I have ever heard. And I don't understand why people compare him to the late Horowitz. Kissin is nothing like him and he doesn't play with the "Horowizt syndrome".
Am I defending him? I sure as hell I am. I don't think any of you can perform like him when you are out there criticizing how he plays like this and like that. I know, I know. Everyone's a critict. But I think he'll have the last laugh if you were to compare his bank account with yours.
