Kings regarding tempi
on: May 30, 2006, 02:39:56 PM
Among great pianists (alive or dead), who are, in your opinion:

1- The king of slow tempos.

2- The king of fast tempos.

What i mean is the tendency of the pianist to adopt slower or faster tempos than usual. For instance, Arrau is a good candidate for 1), and Argerich for 2), in my opinion.

PD: could be a queen, of course  :P

Hmm slow tempos i think of horowitz (2nd movements from mozart sonatas, schumann, scriabin etc) as a superb interpreter of slow pieces. Fast i think about dmitris sugouros, i have never heard anyone else play things as fast as him (the 2nd chopin ballade is off the scale) and volodos.

Slow tempo: Arrau of course !  8)
Fast tempo: Cziffra definitely, no one can match his insane tempos in some Liszt pieces like GGC. :o
