What is your favorite Ligeti piece?
on: June 02, 2006, 11:56:40 PM
Mine would have to be Etude 15 White on White (Aimard recording; Ullen absolutely ruined the piece).  Almost brings me to tears.

i love white on white. just to imagine, such a simple melody makes such a good piece. my favorite pieces are his etudes no 6 book 1 "autumn á varsovie" and etude no 13 book 2 " l'escalier du diable".

Autumn in Warsaw and the devil's ladder are awesome in their own right but white on white seems to stick out the most (to me). The contrast between the quiet first half and the tumultuous second movement is ear-orgasm inducing.

Yeah Ullen has a habit of doing that >>

I like Touchees Bloques, Fanfares, Automne a Varsovie and the second movement of Musica Recirata.

yeh, musica ricercata rocks! I like the one they used in 'eye's wide shut'.  I remember seeing Ligeti explaining the effect of it- was pretty chilling!
'atmosphere's' is cool - first time I listened to it was on an empty stomach, not a good idea :-[!!!

has Aimard recorded the rest of book 3 of the etudes?
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Ligeti's second etude is my favorite, although I haven't listened to white on white yet. There are some pieces by him that I can't stand, and some that I couldn't live without. :)

I have never listened to Ligeti's music, until yesterday night, when i carefully listened to a piece for Organ called VOLUMINA.

It sounded awful (and boring) to my ears, tough... :-X :-X
