Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges. Da Ho playz Poloshirt in F# by Freddy C

This was requested by a few members in another thread.

This is a pirate recording of Horowitz's earth shattering Nov' 26 1967 Carnegie Hall performance. He played it a few other times in the late 60s, but it was never recorded commercially.

Enjoy, and comment.

Ah well, this is awesome. you can really feel like what its like in a live rec... pirated always sounds better... the force with which he plays it and the dynamic contrasts way supercede anything else ive ever heard him play... the way the recording device peaks out is amazing... OMG i just had a shiver of excitement as im listening to it!!!

There is one performance on video. My teacher has it.  ;)

The 1968 TV concert was released on vinyl by Coulmbia as "Horowitz on Television" , and in it's last incarnation as "The Legendary 1968 Television Concert" as part of Sony/Columbia's complete Horowitz Columbia recordings box set. I assume the video is avalable now, pieces of it including the g minor Ballade as well as the Carmen Variations keep showing up on Youtube.

This performance is earlier than the TV one, and superior IMO. It is an astonishing example of Horowitz' playing. Wow...  Thanks, Jake 8)

Excellent. Horowitz at his best yet again. Did anybody else notice a weird twinge at about 9'21" though? Like the speed slowed down just enough to drop everything a half-step at the end.

He played it a few other times in the late 60s, but it was never recorded commercially.

I am staring right now at the CD for Vol.2 of "Valdimir Horowitz: Favorite Chopin", which includes the F#- Polonaise. I actually think that recording is as good or better that this one- also earth-shattering, that one is.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
