Some help with this arpeggios please
on: June 03, 2006, 04:48:36 AM
The fingerings below are the ones I'm thinking of using for this arpeggios in order to aviod playing black keys with my thumb. Take a good look at them and tell me: am I going too far with this, or are these fingerings ok? My hand is big enogh to play them like this, but it's still much more uncomfortable than using the thumB (specially this A minor and the E major). And the problem with the thumb is that i'll get it right some times, and miss the keys many others. So, tell me what you think, thumb or no thumb?

personally I would use my thumb. There are no hard rules about using thumbs on black keys. Most people don't like it because then as a result your other fingers get stuck between the black keys and this makes it a bit more difficult. However, I think that learning to play inside of the black keys can be useful for passages such as these.

Yeah, thanx again for your answer, I think I'll just go with my thumb and practice as much as I can to get it right.

That is a horrible and unnatural fingering - much better to go with 5121.
Don't get hung up about using your thumb on black notes. Avoid doing it in scale-like running passages; otherwise it us not usually a problem.
We often use our thumbs on black notes in Alberti\broken chord passages.

Agree, you should definitely use the thumb for both lines instead of the index finger, believe me, it's much easier if you use the thumb, especially when you play fast. Use the side of the thumb to hit the black key instead of the tip, it's not as difficult as you thought after a few hours of practice.

I've been practicing... I'll definitely go with the thumb. But it's always better to know for sure you're doing the right thing.

This is actually something that most pianists have struggled with at some point or another: "is it ok to use a thumb on a black note?"
Yes, in fact sometimes it's actually required. Good to see you're going to use the thumb. I was trying to imagine playing the passage above with your original fingering and it's just not working for me at all...
Good luck!
