Ruins of Athens: Turkish March
on: June 06, 2006, 12:14:35 PM
Hi, I've a doubt about this. I have a score of this Turkish March for piano, and I have a recording of Alfrend Brendel playing Variations on the Turkish March from The Ruins of Athens. All of these by Beethoven.
What I wanted to know is what are the Ruins of Athens? An orchestral piece, or something for piano? And is the Turkish March a set of variations or are there the March and the Variations on the March? Also, is the March usually played separated from the Ruins of Athens? I don't really understand what's going on with this piece.
Any help would be appreciated.

Alex

The Turkish Marche from Ruines of Athen is a part of music written for a "Festspiel" (play with music) by August von Kotzbue, written on occasion of the opening of the Theatre in Pest (Hungary) 1812. Yes, originally it is an orchestral piece.

7c. Arie: Will unser Genius noch einen Wunsch gewähren? (Adagio)
7d. Arie: Er ist's! Wir sind erhört! (Allegro con brio)
8. Chor: Heil unserm König! (Allegro con fuoco)
