Messiaen's Vingt Regards
on: June 07, 2006, 12:29:28 AM
I'm surprised I like dissonant music like this.

Anyway, which movement is your favorite?  It seems no.10 gets played a lot.

and which one is the most challenging?

thanks.

i personally enjoy no 6, which is anotehjr popular one. it is oen of the longer and more complex ones. that one would probably be one of the msot challenging.

I was also surprised at how much I liked Messiaen the first time I heard it. My favourite is Regard de l'eglise d'amour, but I love them all, specially when you have the score to keep following any "narrative" content that they might have. As soon as you're done with those, I suggest you look up his Preludes pour piano, they're also favourites of mine.

Probably my favorite suite in all of piano literature.

Anyway, pianists agree that the 6 is the most difficult. Followed by Noel (forgot the number), no. 20, and no. 10.

Incredible piece.

Which one is my favorite? I seriously adore every 20, but no. 1, no. 6, Baiser de jesus (again forgot the number) are my absolute favorites.
generally working on:
Bach Toccata in g minor
Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto

I have to say that number one is my favorite... The mystical power in the piece is overwhelming.
Belles journées, souris du temps,
vous rongez peu à peu ma vie.
Dieu! Je vais avoir vingt-huit ans...
Et mal vécus, à mon envie.

Randomly Noel is pretty short/easy.

No. 6 and No. 10 are about equally hard since they're both extremely difficult in extremely different ways.  L'Onction Terrible (No. 19) is also very difficult and is my second favorite movement behind No. 10.

I maintain that 6 is still much more difficult than 10. I know this because.. well, I have played one and "haven't" played another...
