An oldie returning to the piano
on: June 07, 2006, 04:03:02 AM
Hi all,
I'm posting to get some of your opinions... I used to play piano from the age of 9 up until 18. I got up to Grade 4 (AMEB - Australian Music Examination Board) and did a Grade six equivalent when I completed high school - around 18 yrs of age.
At the same time as learning piano I had been doing ballroom dancing and I ended up (to my regret) giving up any serious practice of the piano to pursue ballroom dancing.
Anyway I managed to make the top 24 in the Australian championships in 2003 and now I am wanting to get back into the piano as after 10 years I'm giving competition away.
Now that I'm about 30 years of age what do you guys think about this age as a starting point to making something of myself with Piano? Not too old?
Look forward to hearing yr comments.

Yeah, just begin playing piano again. You developted enough skills in those early years to pick it up easily again.

Yes it's never too late but just try not to have another long hiatus -I haven't been playing for 3 months now and my hand felt as if they are made of wood -I'll play some tomorrow. Always tinker!
But *gasp* how could you choose Ballroom Dancing over Piano? --I suppose, stepping on people's toes is fun as well.

Ballroom dancing is absolutley amazing. Involves the whole body just like the piano does
Definately wont be a long break ever again. I made a separate post in the other forum stating that I've just put a deposit down on a new Kawai GE-20 piano... with any luck I shall be able to pick it up by 30th of June or before.
Can't wait!!

Hi, I'm glad I'm not the only one! I did grade 4 (AMEB) about 25 years ago, and returned to lessons a few years ago now. I'm currently doing grade 7, as well as working full time and raising 2 children. Needless to say, the progress is slow, but rewarding. I'm getting closer to the level I want to be at, and will possibly take on teaching piano as a career change one day.....
I find I approach learning differently as an adult, particularly now that I pay for my own lessons!
