Half note with a slash?

In a piece of music, with 2/2 time, I found a measure with two, unconnected half notes, each with a "/" slash through the bar.  Does this mean that one should play each half note as four repeated eights?  What is this called?
A modern house without a flush toilet... uncanny.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is what you would do.
