i particularly have seen the 4th piece in the gargoyles set (feroce) performed a great number of times at my music school, and there always have been good reviews.

I missed this. Where do you go to school? What did you play to get in?

Since your list of music is all of a European tradition, why not look to Ginastera, Castro, or Chavez?

So, what was the outcome of this long conversation - what piece was chosen?
It sounds like the author chose Barber Interlude #1 (Adagio for Jeanne) as his 20th century piece.
There was a lot of discussion about Medtner, and he ordered the music, but I don't think the audition board is looking for Medtner or Rachmaninoff under the 20th century category - they're so 19th century in style.
I found it odd that the author liked Bartok but not Prokofiev, dissonance being the supposed culprit - Bartok isn't dissonant?

Ah, there are some lovely pieces made by joseph makholm called trois impressions, they are very broad and open to intepretation, i enjoyed playing the second especially, its very nice for concerts and competitions. However there are almost no good recordings online, so its up to you to intpret it.

Perhaps you could post a music file or YT video in Auditions?
