Dates of Pieces
on: June 14, 2006, 03:27:41 PM
Could anyone please tell me for how long the grading pieces that one can learn are valid for? I want to start practising for my grade 3 exam, but don't want the piece to change before I grade if you so what I mean.

I am not sure exactly when I could do the grading as I have lots of other commitments, but if I could find out some dates it would give me more of an idea.. When do the current pieces expire? When do the new ones come out?

Any help would be gratefully received thank you.
Paul.

Well, I know for RCM (Canada), one can play a piece for an exam that is no longer on the list by getting permission from the organization.

It has to be from the same grade level or higher.

they last quite long... ive been looking at the syllabus for ABRSM diploma and they changed the syllabus last in 1997, and then again in 2005 - so it's a good few years for diploma!
For grades 1-8, i think they last about 3 years, so like nine exam periods. Could be two years. Plenty of time though... not like a year!

Go to the ABRSM site. Look under exams, exam regulations, special notices 2006. It seems that the present syllabus for 2005-2006 can be overlapped into the first examination period in spring of 2007. The new syllabus for 2007-2008 appears in July, so it'd be best to wait for that as presumably there'll be a similar overlap period into the 2008 session if you get desperate!
ABRSM also have forums for students and adult learners;

Oh that's great thank you. I will wait for that to appear, to give me plenty of time.

Thanks for you help!
Paul.
