WMA files to MP3?
on: June 17, 2006, 05:53:07 PM
I've been wanting to burn a few songs I've downloaded to a CD (as a music CD) but because it's a .wma file- it won't work.

Any suggestion as to how to convert the file?

Thanks.

princessdecadence, are you burning cd's with Nero?
If so, all you need to do is download the wma plugin (here),
unzip the file and put it under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins.
Then you can burn wma files to audio cd just like mp3 files.

A great program.

I make ape files from my wav files. It's about half the size. When the person on the other end receives it, he can change it back to wav (with dbpoweramp) - and no sound quality loss. It saves a lot of space on your ftp space (and takes half the time to download). Cool!

thats a longer way. if you get dbpoweramp, it doesnt just sort out your WMA files, it can do most of the other audio file formats.

No it's not, her goal is to burn an audio cd, so using an extra program is the longer way not to mention that by converting from one lossy format (wma) to another (mp3) you will be losing quality as well.

Lousy formats? I think they’re great.

I doubt if you could hear the difference between a wma and a wma converted to mp3 . It's even difficult to hear the difference between a wav and an mp3.

This is the same sound clip in different formats:
MP3
https://www.artistcollaboration.com/~johnny-boy/Test.mp3
WMA
https://www.artistcollaboration.com/~johnny-boy/Test.wma
WAV
https://www.artistcollaboration.com/~johnny-boy/Test.wav

I don't hear any noticeable difference. If there is it's so slight that nobody's going to give a hoot.

I didn't say they were lousy formats but lossy formats, meaning that they sacrifice quality for compression.
As for the difference in sound quality, it depends on the used compression. For low compression it will indeed be difficult to hear the difference but anyway the main point of my post was that it's not a longer way as someone suggested because there is no need to convert when you install that plugin.

Sorry about misinterpreting "lossy" - I didn’t realize you were creating a new word.  However, I disagree with "lossy" also.

Best, John :)

I didn't make up that word, it's an existing and often used word in data compression. See this wikipedia article.
For the record I have nothing against lossy compression, quite the contrary.

I guess one is never through learning. I never heard that word before. My humble apologies. :-[

this particular conversion may not be a long process, but it is in the long-term. dbpoweramp sorts out the future problems so this person can avoid asking questions again, whereas Nero you have to find another plugin for another file conversion format. besides, Nero is actually not a good piece of software. I use a program called burrn, which has been more highly credited in software reviews. however, my disliking of nero is within its use when writing files onto DVD-rws and its user sharing problems across users that i dont give power-user or administrative priviledges.

I love this program.

But do you know where I can get a crack for it?  I have been searching and searching, and all I got is viruses and porn.
