Yet another Chopin op. 10 no. 12...
on: June 18, 2006, 05:47:40 PM
...although you're probably all bored to death with the lot of them... anyway...

These are live recordings from concerts... Recorded with no special microphone whatsoever, just camrecorder, so the sound quality isn't very high and the differences in dynamics are a bit smudged...

I like the first recording a bit more, although there are three obvious flubs... I think it has a more fiery feel...

Compare, contrast, constructively criticise, all of these greatly appreciated!

Very good job here.  Nice clarity, you sound in control of your chosen tempo.

I think what this needs now is more defined phrasing, and nuanced expression.  Right now you are very clear with your LH, this is good - but what can make it better is a complimentary RH that sings.  I'd like to hear you shape the bigger phrases more, and also breath between them.  Look at the bigger picture.  You can give even give a more revolutionary effect by pushing and pulling more, bringing out some RH notes and less on others.  Try using the harmonic progressions as a clue to where the music is leading and where phrasal peaks and valleys occur.

More rubato in the LH would help the RH phrasaing.  It doesn't always have to be strict.  Think of waves cresting on a beach - or better yet sea swells as your boat bobs up and down in a storm.  You can also articulate selected LH bass notes for some additional variety.  The relentless LH can do with points of variety to avoid a monotonous nature.  Also playing with the pedal - half pedal, some smudgging here, a little less there - can give more colour.

14.6.2006 - Careful on the RH dotted rhythms here Eg: Bar 10-11; 12-13 on Eb.  Flattening out the dotted rhythm too much makes the melody loose it's punch.  If you need to breath in a dotted rhythm, do so by extending the dot  - not inserting a pause between the 16th and the following main beat.

Bar 18 and 58 RH - For some reason you sometimes accent beat 2 here.  The accent is written on beat 1 with resolution on beat 2.

Great playing, keep it up.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
