Famous Russian Piece ID
on: June 20, 2006, 01:54:14 AM

Guys,

Im after the title of that piece, you know the one... well, you probably dont but you would I could describe it well enough!

Its like the most Russian piece you've ever heard, very famous, sounds a bit like the first theme of Rach2, the main motif is these big minor key string arpeggios. Pretty slow, has this big plodding accompaniment.

Anyone has an idea which piece Im on about?

No?

Give me a sec, I'll do a quick midi sketch...

Um... i'll take a guess before the midi turns up.

Mussourgsky's Great Gate of Kiev? That's pretty Russian. Probably way off, too.

Phil,

Might be mate, I will check it out.

Meanwhile, here is midi mock up of the main melodic motif of this piece. Probably in the wrong key, but very recognisable all the same.

Nope. Great Gate is much slower and brooding.

I think that might be the beginning to Prokofiev's 'Montagues and Capulets' from the Romeo and Juliet suite.

Heres another clue...

This piece was featured on the opening sequence of the UK Apprentice TV series. You know, the bit where Sugar is telling everyone what for  ;)

As Phil13 rightly said, it's the beginning of "Montagues and Capulets" from the Romeo and Juliet suite by Prokofiev.
Belles journées, souris du temps,
vous rongez peu à peu ma vie.
Dieu! Je vais avoir vingt-huit ans...
Et mal vécus, à mon envie.
