2 types of popular sheet music
on: December 23, 2003, 10:56:56 PM
Hello, I'm new to this forum, so sorry if this has been answered elsewhere already, but...

My piano instructor once told me that there are two types of sheet music written for popular songs:

1) the music you play solo, which carries the melody of the song, and

2) the music that is accompanied by the voice of the artist.

My question is, does anybody know what these types are called, and where I can find popular music of the 2nd category.  I want to play, for example, Angel by Sara McGlauglin (sp?), just as she plays it.

Thank you.

The first is called piano solo, and the second is called piano/vocal, or PV.  Both are likely to have "guitar chords" notated above the written music.  If you want to play along with a singer, simply play the chords (usually on the first count of the measure, and sometimes on the third as well) while the singer does her thing.  You can cheat and use the chords as written in the music, or use the guitar chord names and make up your own voicings.
