on: July 01, 2006, 01:53:42 PM
I am playing a piece, Poulenc Napoli Suite, and need your help in translating the meaning to English. I dont understand French at all. Need your help please. These are the French:

Assez anime
tres egal
M.D. dessus tres marque
cedez un peu
bref
leger
assez marque
ceder un peu
presque lent
ceder encore
laisser vibrer
mettre tres exactement la pedale
la grande pedale seule
tres lie
le chant uniforme et sans nuances
brusque
bien faire vibrer Voctave
arpeger le moins possible
le chant tres marque
sec
tres soutenu
tres marque
leger et mordant
tres sec et tres fort
sans presser
ceder a peine
au mouvt
animer un peu
cinglant
revenir au Mouvt
un peu plus vite qu'au debut du morceau
arrache
tres sec
eclatant
m.g. par-dessus
eclatant
loujours

I think it is too much already, but I really need your help please. I've check in the alta vista but there are some that I don't really understand the meaning.

waiting for your reply.. :D

Here's my best shot. I probably should have waited for one of the francophones, though... ::)

Quote
Assez anime - animated or lively enough
tres egal - very equal
M.D. dessus tres marque - RH above very marked
cedez un peu - hold back/back off a bit
bref - brief
leger - light
assez marque - marked/stressed enough
ceder un peu - same as cedez un peu
presque lent - almost slow
ceder encore - back off again
laisser vibrer - let vibrate
mettre tres exactement la pedale - place the pedal very exactly
la grande pedale seule - only the ?  pedal - sorry, not sure how the French refer to the   pedals
tres lie - very joined (molto legato)
le chant uniforme et sans nuances - the song/melody equally and unaccented
brusque - abrupt(ly)
bien faire vibrer Voctave - I don't think it could be Voctave...if it's l'octave - let the octave vibrate well
arpeger le moins possible - arpeggiate (roll chord?) as little as possible
le chant tres marque - the melody very marked
sec - dry, curt, harsh...I think of it as the opposite of warm
tres soutenu - very sustained
tres marque - very marked/stressed
leger et mordant - light and biting??
tres sec et tres fort - very dry and very strong
sans presser - without speeding up
ceder a peine - scarcely holding back
au mouvt - a tempo
animer un peu - get a bit faster
cinglant ??
revenir au Mouvt - return to movement (possibly to tempo)
un peu plus vite qu'au debut du morceau - a little faster than at the beginning of the piece
arrache - pull(ed) out/snatch(ed)/relentless
tres sec - very dry
eclatant - brilliant
m.g. par-dessus - LH above
eclatant - wait, I just did this one
loujours - I think that must be toujours - always or still
