Markus Groh's Liszt?
on: July 04, 2006, 07:38:42 AM
Has anyone heard this amazing CD? (SACD, actually) It contains the Sonata in b, Fantasia and Fugue on B-A-C-H, and Totentanz (solo version). He combine staggering technique with great individuality. Couple that with outstanding sonics, and you have quite an enjoyable CD. It's on the Avie label.

I heard him play the Brahms Concerto No. 1 in concert and thoroughly enjoyed it.
When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

SACDs (Super Audio Compact Disc) are recorded at a much high sampling rate than normal digital audio (64x higher, I believe.) The resulting sound is much fuller and warmer than standard digital audio when played back on an SACD player. Most SACD recordings, this one included, are dual layer or "hybrid" so they will play on either type of player. Sadly, they seem to be losing favor among the major record companies, which is a true shame in light of the vastly improved sound.

I wasn't familiar with him either--I actually bought this CD just to have the repertoire in SACD sound--what a lucky gamble! Here are a few useful sites:
