Which are your favorites?
I like 7 and 8 (haven't listened to Ullen's entire album yet).
These etudes are at least 1000000000000²³ times better than the OC.

they are better and more straightforward than OC, but not that much better. my favorites are nos 9 and 16. they truly are great pieces of work.

Haven't heard all of them but no. 10 is absolutely amazing! It even has a quasi-melody .....

no 10 is the one with the arpeggios racing all over. thats perhaps not the best to listen to if you want a "generic" melody.

I cannot stand the Sorabji etudes. My teacher has tried to make me, but I refuse. He has recordings on the sorabji archives, and is mad about sorabji. But I must admit, it's just sounds awful to me. I don't understand why my teacher like it, becasue everyone here seems to be like wow virtuosity!! yet my teacher is never like that, if anything, he hates virtuosity, so it beats me to why he recorded them.

who is your teacher? he must be damn good if he has recordings on the sorabji archive.

and sorabji is not all about virtuosity. you just need to investigate it further, listen to it a few times, and begin to understand it to see the musical genius behind it. however, all that may be too much for one to take in.

I'm not saying who my teacher is...just incase he comes on this site and realises I am on this instead of practicing haha. I no a few of the performers on it, they are professors at where I study.

I keep giving it 2nd chances, and still don't like it. I am a big fan of contempory music, but Sorabji just doesn't do anything for me.  Must just be a matter of taste

fredrik ullén is currently in the process of recording all 100 transcendental etudes. it is, indeed, a transcendental task.

No, there are no free recordings of anything there - and why should there be? There are quite a few recordings around, however and, as "jre" has observed, there are samples of some of the 100 Transcendental Studies on Fredrik Ullén's website. Volumes 2 & 3 of this ongoing cycle have been recorded and should be out sometime this year. We'll see, in the meantime, if the entire 100 come out on a set of CDs recorded by Joyce Hatto...
