haven't heard of dudamel - must go listen.  herbert von karajan was a legend.  like ricardo muti and only a handful of conductors who have so much repertoire that is easily understood when they conduct - and really messed up by others in comparison.  the only other conductor that comes to mind is stokowski.  those three (karajan, muti, stokowski) are my favorites.

but, if i were to perform a piano concerto - i'd pick leonard bernstein if he were still living.  he allows the breath of the performer to enter.  some of the others were pushy about exact tempos - but they always made their point.  i don't want to fight with a conductor - but i want to be allowed room to express myself and still have a dialogue with the orchestra.  (also, i don't want anyone tapping their stick during my solos).

Definitely Karajan was the superior - in fact, many (myself included) regard him as the greatest conductor of this generation.
Fortune favours the musical.

Mmmm.. Never heard of Dudamel, Karajan was a legend of course, but still not my favourite. The greatest for me was Karl Böhm, with slow tempos and all.
