pedal doesnt working on some keys!
on: July 09, 2006, 05:45:18 PM
Hey,
I got Petrof upright and some problems occured..

On some keys pedal do not work !?
on "left side" of piano only..
Couple (well, more then couple) of white keys, and almost half of black keys (on "left side")..

I opened upright and I can see that "pedal mechanism" just dont work for those keys..  this "moving mechanism" just dont move enough to release key..

Is there any advice how to fix that WITHOUT technician.. Cause It is so frustrating to play like this.. I am very good with "hand" jobs, so I am sure I can do everything  what need to...

THank you!
(and sorry for terrible English, I am in hurry so I can't think for right word:)  )

Rip of that front plate of the piano and look what is happening if you press that pedal.
1+1=11

At the other end of the pedal itself, there is usually a screw or a bolt attaching it to a horizontal wooden stick. By turning that screw or bolt you can adjust the contact between the pedal and the dampers. This is a temporary solution only; a properly working piano needs the dampers to respond exactly the same.

First, perhaps, check that all the wooden sticks are connected as they should! Remove the front plate where your legs are!

Thanks for info,
Yes, there is a screw, couple of them.
I guess I just have to play with them..
If I do not succeed, I'll post a picture (and video) so maybe you can help me..

I will leave this problem to a technician.

No doubt you good at "hand job" but piano mechanism (action) is just too complex and sensitive. You might put the piano into a serious problem if you simple fiddle somethings that is not correct. I was told that the 1 part can effect the other. By that thime, the bill will cost you more than what it is now. Why? Is it so hard to pick the phone, dial the technician's number and make an appointment.

My advice is "Stay away from the inside of the piano unless you're a piano technician". Would you play around with your car engine or gear box if you find that something is not right? :o
Regards.

I allready "fixed" it.. it's ok now but the sound changed..
Here is the question:

Is it supposed to be when you fully press pedal; strigs are completely free??
Now my pedal is more "agressive" when I press it i got clearer/more powerfull sound then before..

is it way to be?, or I messed it up..
Did I played all this year with not properly pedal,
or fully pressed pedal must touch strings a little??

I can allways reverse procedure, so I am not concerned...

It's been my experience that a fully pressed pedal has no dampers touching strings.  However I find on pianos with shallow pedalling, the final position of the dampers is closer to the strings than on pianos with deep pedalling.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

So what's your suggest ?
No touching at all  or  touching slighty strings??

How does it work on "professional" pianos ??

Of course the dampers are NOT supposed to touch the strings! You, the player, are supposed to be able to control a variety of pedalling-techniques. From fully released to half-released etc...(half-pedalling it's called, no?). This is also the reason why it's so important that the dampers work perfectly even! Off at the same instant, and on at the same instant!
