Piano and... typing.
on: December 26, 2003, 02:36:32 PM
This seems an odd question (because it is). Does anybody type really quickly or really slowly? I'm just considering the correlation between playing the piano and typing-- specifically whether it helps.

ABsolutely no correlkation- this is me typing at full speed, with all errors and mistakes.  I misspell lots of words despite my piano-playing ablilites.  If you are a bvad typer, dont let it discourage you!  :)

I think that the only correlation is that you type well if you spend a lot of time on the computer

Good topic! I type extremely fast and accurately, because of the piano. Firstly, the super-fast reflexes you get from the piano. Then there is the mobility and dexterity of the fingers, for instance, I am currently typing with my left hand only, and it looks cool from here. I jump around a lot, but very effortlessly, I convserve energy, my fingers know what to do and they waste no more energy than is needed doing it. I hated typing classes in school, they were so strict about "hands stay in one place" and nonsense.

hey Rach3 how on EARTH do you do that??i can type with one hand at a decent pace but you make yourself sound like you're burning up your keyboard! (the... computer keyboard, that is..)

I normally type at an ok pace, assuming I know what I'm going to say. Which, come to think about it, I never...

How to practice hitting the right notes at long distance--- play Liszt's La Campanella. That should do the trick  ;)

I don't think that there is alot of relationship between the two, but there is some.  The first year I took piano I was also in a typing class, and was doing very well in the typing class.  After I finished the class, though, I have slowly lost my typing speed despite continuing with piano. (although its still not bad, I can do from 60-70 gwam)  I suspect that is because I don't type as much anymore, and am thus out of practice.  However, piano does tone the muscles and ligaments in your hands, as well as sharpen your reflexes, and I imagine that is helpful for typing.

There are more people who type very well... So there's in my opinion no relation between typing and piano.

I can type very fast if I need to. I like to jump La Campanella jumps to press numpad keys and I make my hand span bigger by grabbing 'chords' ;D. Even though the back of my keyboard says I shouldn't...
