prokofiev piano concerto no.5
on: July 27, 2006, 04:41:20 AM
what do people think about prokofiev's 5th concerto?
I really think this concerto is one of his best.. although his second is the best in my opinion... but i love this one too... infact  i heard the 5th concerto before any other.... and liked it immediately...... the slow movement from it has a really sad central part....followed by this tranquil mysterious section...  infact the whole of that movement is some of the best stuff written by him.... in my opinion... the outer movements are as amazing....  for those who havent heard it... they should .....

I've heard this a few times, and it remains at the bottom of my Prokofiev "PC favorites list"; but I'll relisten with fresh ears.  8)

I think Richter played it as a world wide promiere. Prokofiev actually asked richter to play it. It was a great succes. I think Sviatoslav learned it in 3 months if I remember good.
Currently learing:
- Chopin: Ballade No.3
- Scriabin: Etude Op. 8 No. 2
- Rachmaninoff: Etude Op. 33 No. 6
- Bach: P&F No 21 WTC I

I think it's amazing, and underated. My favorite recordings are Richter's and Boris Berman's.

A pale shadow of pieces like the 2nd and 3rd... even the 1st. But, it's not bad like the 4th. I'm not surprised that the pianist who commissioned it refused to play it.

According to Wikipedia, Prokofiev himself was the soloist and Wilhelm Furtwängler the conductor at the premiere...

The 4th is more well-known? If so, I can't imagine why. It's awful.

WAIT:  The 4th PC is for the left hand, so how can you compare it to the others?
