He is alcoholic. He will go into rehab fail. Hit the sauce again, die, then make a comeback playing Yundi Li's recital programmes.

On June 18th, this year, Volodos performed in the Masterpianist series of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He played well, very well indeed. And his encores were astonishingly good.

The only "conspicuous" thing was, that he used a chair instead of a stool.

There are always  rumours that you hear.

Both Barere and Hofmann became alcoholics and they played great despite this.

Sloppier then before but still very good.

Many pianists prefer a chair during long concerts.

I haven't heard anything about that, but then, I didn't know how famous he was until a few weeks ago. I personally hate rumours, and a decrease in activity might not be an indicator of alcoholism or any other problems, but maybe of a "rest" in his career. Dying prematurely is unfortunately a habit in performers, although conductors are the only ones to escape this generalisation.

I think alcoholism is an extremely unlikely condition for him the get in, except if he started associating with the wrong type of Russian comrade back home....

The Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, undertaken regularly since 1992, contains data on between 10 and 12 thousand people (Zohoori, 1996Go). In the round undertaken in 1995, 70–80% of males aged 20–55 years and 50–60% of females aged 20–50 years drank regularly, with 5–10% in all age groups drinking the equivalent of over 100 g per day. It seems reasonable to assume that some of those who drank most heavily were less likely to be included in the survey, so these figures may have been underestimates.

And he played in Paris on the 21st of may and I couldn't go because I was doing a Mozart concerto!

And his parents visited me last week, but they didn't talk about their son at all...

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31. Piano Street’s members are invited to watch the livestream. Read more
