William Bolcom
on: August 03, 2006, 12:15:00 PM
Besides "Monsterpieces", which of William Bolcom's works work well for students?
How long are they?
How contemporary-sounding are they?
Which are the easiest? Which are intermediate? Which are advanced?
Anybody know?
Thank you!

I hadvn't played to much of Bolcom's work, but the few that I have, I know are good for the lower-advanced to advance student. The Rags, especially his 3 Ghost Rags are nice, not to weird but offer some nice alternative to the Joplin Rag. I perfer the Graceful Ghost Rag which is on a list of many piano comepetitions. Hope this is a good place to start.

The Garden of Eden Suite is probably the most advanced within the rags...especially III. The Serpent's Kiss

Thank you, both! I appreciate the info.
Now it looks like the Ghost Rags will be on a couple Halloween recitals in October. No one's up for the Eden Suite at this time, but your comments were certainly helpful.
Thanks!
