overrated PIECES of all time
on: January 03, 2004, 05:32:33 PM
ever hear a lot of hype over something, rush out and buy it, and then listen dumbstruck to some bizarre monstrosity?

well to start an actual response to my thread, i offer ravel's bolero.  i had heard so many people talk wonderfully about it and it then came as a dreadful shock when it was the same thing for 15 minutes.  i had only stopped having an argument with someone about the unoriginality of the band Tool for playing the same thing for ridiculous amounts of time when i heard this classical piece commiting the same sin.  i was shocked.

Well, I might vouch for Claire de Lune being overrated by non-musical audiences.  At family gatherings, everybody fawns over how beautiful it is, but to tell you the truth, I've never really liked it that much.  Come to think of it, I think alot of Debussy is overrated.

its good to see tool mentioned in this forum, they are a really good band, i think one could learn a little from aenima, eulogy, or possibly schism? overrated music - radiohead is severely overrated imo, liszt sonata in b minor is overrated, le quatre ages is better by far, sjt peppers is overrated, the white album and MMT are underrated, the 1st 2 mvts of the moonight sonata are overrated, the 3rd is extremely underrated, rach 3 is overrated , rach 1 and 2 are underrated(in this forum), bach's goldberg variations are overrated,
alkan's festin d'aesop is a far more appealing set of variations to me.

my opinions are definitive, noone can argue with these undisputed facts of life

I wouldn't call the Rach 3 overrated, but I do think that it is overplayed.  It may be louder and faster than number 2, but really, I think few pieces are as touching as some passages in number 2.

Vivaldi's Four Seasons (his other violin concerti are just as interesting)

Handel's Hallelujah from Messiah

Beethoven's Fur Elise and the first movement of his Moonlight Sonata.

It seems to me that this thread is mixing up two things: overrated pieces, and overplayed pieces. I am not sure they are the same. Fro instance, I would consider Fur Elise overrated, but the Moonlight (first movement) overplayed (Vivaldi the four seasons also seems to me more a case of overplayed than overrated). ???

I think Mozarts Rondo alla Turca is way overrated. It is  great piece but Mozart has written much better rondos than that famous one. And it's overplayed too.

I think Im going to get beat up for saying this, but I think Beethoven's HammerKlaveir is overrated, sure its the hardest piano compostion he wrote, but it sucks, its theme, is quite boring.  For something that hard to play i expected more.........

oh man.. yeah. you are gonna get beaten up by me.. It's such a glorious piece of work. The theme is not boring at all, and what he is able to do.. damn. nobody has ever attempted such a thing before him, and it's not THAT hard. :)

The fugue's one of the most interesting compositions I've ever heard/played/seen. The slow movement's serious as it gets, and the scherzo is just crazy. I've completely fallen in love with is and am now looking for oppurtunities to perform it as much as possible. It's also one of my warm-up pieces.

I'd say Moonlight sonata 1st movement, Clair de lune (debussy wrote so many more good pieces), Fantaisie Impromptu (nice, but really quite shallow, with INSANELY long slow portions), Canon in D (hell yeah)

well, if we're talking overplayed, we must include the thaikovsky concerto- it's good but, god, why every single pianist under the sun learns it is beyond me.

jees- i never would have guessed-  you'd assume the only reason it's played so much is because it's all he had- i'd be very interested to hear one of the others...how many were there?

I have to go along with the Tchaikovsky First being overrated.  I tried learning it a while back, and eventually got bored with it, and stopped.  Rachmaninoff's Concertos are so much better, in my opinion.  I'd swear, at some points especially in the first movement of the Second Conerto I just have to fall silent.  For me, there's no comparison between the Tchaikovsky First and the Rach Second.

Perhaps the beethoven concertos are overrated... compared to mozart

debussy might be overrated except if you're in a good mood in a parisian garden with the mists of the seine...

Tchaik 1 has some good bits.. but isnt it a bit like patchwork?

Mahler [compared to Bruckner]????????

The Tchaikovsky B flat is certainly NOT overrated.

Overplayed, but NOT overrated. It remains the archetype of its genre.
