How is a pianist dressed?
on: August 09, 2006, 09:20:18 PM
Are pianists dressed different? I don't mean during a concert. But just in usual life, during the week, during the weekend. When they go to a party, when they go to family, friends,...

Depends where he lives and how his tastes are.  Personally, I dress orgasmically well on any occasion and I suppose I would if I weren't a pianist too.  lol

i used to want to be identified as a pianist - so i did wear a lot of black.  but, it is like advertising that you are a twin (of the piano).  white/black.

black might not even be your color.  i think if you mean advertising yourself as a professional (no matter if it is piano, architecutre, whatever) you do sell yourself.  a lady came a few days ago with a pair of black pants and white shirt and she worked at closet factory.  her sunglasses made the outfit.  there IS an element of classicism in black/white.

but, after some thought - i was color analyzed and decided to start wearing turquoise.  then, i got bored of that color and wore a lot of peach.  then, it started becomign a hideous color to me and i wear a lot of white again.  whatever makes your skin tone look the best, i think.  whatever is near your face.  and, whatever clothes draw attention up to your face.  overusing jewelry or accessories seems bad taste to me.  i think that men and women look best with a few simple pieces.  i think i am a classical dresser.  i dress exactly like my favorite time period of music.

And do you also think a pianist dresses may be more extravagant? When I would have to discribe my style, it is may be a bit stranger, but with taste. I where a normal jeans, black classical shoes, but I will put a strange line on top.

When i was a teenager, I went through a "Ashkenazy polo necked jumper" phase.

It lasted about 2 years.

My wife decides initially whether a given occasion demands "poncey" clothes or "grotty" clothes. Once this simple official announcement of type has been made, I have absolute freedom of choice within each category. This wonderful arrangement guarantees complete amicability and was arrived at after years of experiment and banter.

"Everybody can see what you had for breakfast with those shorts."
"If you wear that shirt with the hole in it I shall walk on the other side of the street."
"You mustn't wear that poncey suit, you'll make me look dowdy."
"Those shoes are too posh for tea with Mrs Mountfast. Just give your gardening shoes a scrub."
.
.
After many years of such admonitions it was a tremendous relief to have the whole thing sorted out.

poncey. now what exactly does that mean.  in the context of the statemnt it seems that it is supposed to go with dowdy - but i always thought 'pimp' suit.  you know - all white.  oh, you'll make HER look dowdy.  oh.  i see.  that would be hard if you had a spot on it.  but, nevertheless, it is a good idea never to dress better than your wife.  we often have this problem after my husband's work.  he'll suddenly say - let's go out to eat.  he has a suit on - i am dressed in t-shirt and shorts and hair fairly casually messed up.  he says 'no one cares.'  well, no one cares unless they have a dress code and only let one person in.

now that's poncy.

i found out pedallng is best done with sort of squared off shoes.  i always used rounded toe pumps - but surprisingly - if you look - you can find sort of squared off ones. not majorly - jsut a little.  it does help with pedalling.  but i can't say that i would wear them if i wasn't playing the piano.

i don't feel like i have to advertise piano only.  i know some people who make homemade clothes with vests and all that have musical figures on them.  sort of pillow fabric like material with baroque ornamentation or something.  i used to try to do my hair like clara schumann.

guess there's something to a 'signature' look.  one organist that i knew used to always wear a carnation in his pocket.  i always knew it was him because he was the only person i ever knew that wore bow ties, too.  colorful ones.

i was surprised at helene grimaud's concert (playing rach 2) that she came out in pants and simple white shirt.  but, it worked.  i was expecting a formal.

diane bish (organist) wears really sparkly stuff.  it's cool, too.  but, what if you had something really beaded and one of the strings came out and you started dropping beads?

how many here routinely keep a handkerchief up their sleeve?

Motrax wears whatever's at the top of the pile of clothes in his dresser.
