Compositions similar to Liszt Consolation No3
on: August 10, 2006, 08:10:55 AM
Hello, I like the mood of the Liszt Consolation No3, I'd be very pleased if anyone could suggest other compositions that have a similar character. I like its quiet, serene, even longing character, please let me know what else there is like this. Many thanks in advance.

It's not really the same thing, but it's also light and rather quiet and I love it:

Erik Satie:

Gymnopédie no 1
Gymnopédie no 2
Gymnopédie no 3
Gnossienne 1,2,3,4,5,6
Nocturnes 1,2,3,4,5
Pièces froides - Trois airs à fui

Download (or buy) the cd 'After the rain...' contains a lot of beautiful Erik Satie pieces played by Pascal Rogé which he plays very well.

Besides the mood, you could find a similar arpegiatted accompanyment in the Mendelssohn's Song without word named "The Sighing Wind", and in the Rachmaninoff's Op. 23 Preludes, No. 4 and 6, though the latter pieces both have intense climaxes.

On the other hand, you don't ask for it, but I'd prefer to play the Consolations 1, 2 and 3 consecutively. I feel them as a unit, sharing the same mood, and each one leading into the next one.

Thanks everyone for these replies, two others come to mind also, the Schubert Ave Maria and the middle section of the Rachmaninoff Prelude in G Minor. Does anyone know if there are other works by Liszt where there is that similar quality of singing melody as in the Consolation No3? Thanks for the suggestions so far and please post more examples!

based on the mood of the piece...you might like these

Liszt                 Sonetto de Petrarca 104
Liszt                 Un Sospiro
Debussy           Claire de Lune
Liebermann      Gargoyles, 3rd Mvt
Chopin             Nocturne Op.27, No.2 (This is probably the closest to the consolation)
Brahms            Op.118, No.2

i'll add more when i think of 'em

sorabji's pastice on the hindu merchant's song from "sadko" has a nice, serene feeling and color that i think would suffice.

I think that the easiest piece similar to this is Liszt's Etude op.1 no.9 - Ricordanza.

A Rach prelude comes to my mind. Even though Rach is not my cup of tea, I find it to be of rare lyrical beauty, very moving like the Liszt consolation.  I think it is 5 from op. 32 and in G-major.

Rach Op. 23 #5, middle section.

Liszt S139 #4, middle section.

Brahms Op. 118 No. 2 Intermezzo- very popular.

Liszt Op. 1 #9 would be interesting.  I would be very very interested to see Liszt's Opus 1.
