1. A man, while on sentry duty, dreams of the time and place of the enemy's upcoming attack. He tells an officer, the army gets prepared, and easily wins the battle. Then the aforementioned sentry is killed. Why?

Either the army that you refer to is the enemy, and the sentry is killed in battle; or they sentence him to death at dawn for witchcraft and win the battle the usual way.

3. What can run but never walks,
has a mouth but never talks,
has a head but never weeps,
has a bed but never sleeps?

A river

4. When you say my name,
I no longer exist.

Who am I?

Silence, as already said

5. A box without hinges, key, or lid,

Yet golden treasure inside is hid

A bank with finger-print identification, thus no key.

You didn't turn on the computer? But no, then how could the file be open?

No, he is not of the other army, and he is not killed for witchcraft.

The bank vault would still have a lid and hinges. Tryagain.

Nope, don't think so hard. Look for something I DID'NT mention in the paragraph.

It sounds like you need to connect a cable, but the puzzle question isn't stated very well since what you described wouldn't happen in that case either.

"I tried printing and nothing happened" generally never happens. Either the printing is successful [and thus if the fully functional printer didn't print it implies it went to a different printer or the software is faulty] - perhaps even a software one like 'print to file' or the printing isn't successful. But in both cases something happens that you can observe on the computer - at least on most operating systems I've ever used. Perhaps this is a feature of Macs? :D

 - at least not when the puzzle states explicitly that there's absolutely nothing wrong with the printer.

Except during phone calls to tech support...and they'll roll their eyes sigh and..." sir,...click start..yes click, with the mouse at the bottom left of the screen...err monitor?...yes it's the thing you're probably using as a lamp...." :D

with paper in it?  and an ink catridge?  i think it is more likely that he checked the ink cartridge and although it looked fine - the printer was saying 'need more ink.'

or  ...

he had a hard time completely shutting the ink cartridge or left the paper try slightly out.  or, paper jam.  or, hmmm.  it's a completely freak and random printer with a bad connection.

i have a puzzle.  can there be two people in the same neighborhood who's car door opener part of the keys work on each other's car?  i have gone out several times to my van and just as i'm at the door - the doors lock again.  it is making me go crazy.  i look around (my keys are usually in my purse as i see the van is unlocked until i reach it) and there's noone around.  can hondas have technical problems like this?  noone that i know indoors (as hubby was upstairs on computer and kids doing something else).   perhaps they are self-locking doors and ihave some kind of flip switched inside the car that tells them to lock again?

i have a puzzle.  can there be two people in the same neighborhood who's car door opener part of the keys work on each other's car?

It certainly used to be possible with some of those devices for a 3rd party to pick up the signal that your door opener transmits and, if the security isn't particulary strong [which when they first appeared was the case], mimic your door opener in the future and (un)lock the door.

e,g for some, the code the opener sent changed at each press and the car knew the sequence. In case you stand in the pub pressing it, the car usually accepts the next n codes in the sequence and will open the door if it gets one of them. If the sequence is easy to predict someone else can predict it.

But that would imply someone [at one time] close enough to pick up the signal as well as your car getting it, and, at the time when your door is locking, they must be sending it fairly close too.

If it happens exactly as you reach the door it sounds suspicious...a fault would more likely lock the door more randomly than that. That said, if it is someone, they are clearly comedians rather than crooks, since they are advertising they can do it, I doubt they'll pinch your car.

You'd need to google for the specific device or van to get more specifics though.

I would have thought there must be some around now that are much more difficult to open though, so perhaps it's just a fault.

thanks for the reply.  maybe i'll go over to the dealership and ask, too.  it sounds likely that there is something that sends a signal (whether trickster in the neighborhood - but haven't seen any) from my own key ring without even pushing it - as it only happens when i am standing right beside the door.  there's some automatic stuff - automatic door locks that i haven't figured out yet, too, and perhaps they are turned on inside the van.  sometimes i am so stupid regarding new technology.

Pianistimo - in regards to the automatic locks on Hondas - they have an automatic feature in which if you push "unlock" from your remote, but you don't open any doors in a certain amount of time, it will automatically re-lock.  I'm not sure what the time frame is.  However, if you open any of the doors, it will remain unlocked from then on until you lock it again.
When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

oohhh.  thank you!  i'm such an idiot.  now, i understand what's happening.  (seriously, the first time i rebuked satan - guess he gets bad rap all the time).  when it happened three and four times i was thinking that i was possessed.  i didn't try anything on anyone else.  but, until coming on pianostreet and asking -it was a truly perplexing situation.  i was really wondering who in the neighborhood would have the time to just sit and watch and wait for me to come out and get right next to the car door.  and yes, sometimes i do unlock it from the window inside the house - grab my purse, and then walk - so it's a minute or so.

the box is cubed?  but an egg isn't cubed.  what realities are we discussing here.  the hobbit was written in another dimension.  are we dealing with schroedinger's cat again.  and how can 1+1 = 2,3,4,  ... oh, i get it!  two people can have 20 children if they try.

1. Manhole covers are very heavy, and a round shape prevents them from falling into the manhole itself. A square or rectangular cover could fall in very easily.

2. No idea. 30, maybe?

#2 46     but that question is very confusing.  i thought there was a pattern going on.  then all of a sudden it stops and starts again.  perhaps this time it is tripled instead of doubled.  that would make the number 69.

That's right. A circle is the only shape which cannot be turned around somehow and dropped through a similar hole.

The rule of the series is extremely simple, so don't bother with interpolation formulae or anything like that. It's amazing how long it takes people to get this one. I'll let it go for a while; someone's bound to see it soon.

Here's a favourite problem of an old schoolteacher when I was a boy. It requires nothing except simple logic and arithmetic but remarkably few in his classes solved it.

A man goes out between one and two o'clock in the afternoon and returns between four and five in the afternoon. Upon his return, the hour and minute hands have exactly swapped position.

What time did he leave ?

This is a really silly kind of riddle, but I like them. Your supposed to ask yes or no questions and try to figure out what happened, so the game really needs to be played in real time... But who cares?  :)

A man goes to a restaraunt and orders Albatross. Albatross he tells the waiter, he hasent had for years, and is looking very much forward to trying it again. The man tells the waiter that his old friend is a specialist with Albatross. The waiter brings out the Albatross before the man can explain further and the man takes one bite of the bird and throws up. Why?

Hint: Something very terrible happened to the man years ago.
Hint: His sudden sickness is not from food poising, allergys etc...

 This is cool..

Both times are in the afternoon. It isn't a trick question; I should have said that.

phil13:

Close, but not the answer. In terms of fractions of a clock face, at 1:21 the hour hand will be at 81/720 and the minute hand at 252/720. At 4:06 the hour hand will be at 246/720 and the minute hand at 72/720.

Not quite an exact swap. A good approximate guess, but the trick is to find the precise times.

Very sharp eyesight, one imagines ! It's just a useless but interesting arithmetical puzzle, nothing to do with actually reading a precise time visually.

A man fell off a building. Someone saw this and called the police. But when the police arrived, the body was not there. What happened to the body?

The building was on the edge of the river, so the body floated away.

1 - The man was a burglar, and he only fell from the first floor window. The person who phoned the police did so to report the crime, but the burglar ran off before they arrived.

2 - British version. The police took so long to arrive that the body had been devoured by rats.

2a - Kentish version. The man who fell off had been playing the Schumann Piano Concerto on the roof as a publicity stunt, and the police were delayed for hours by angry residents. Same rats - they are everywhere in the south-east.

2b - Piano Street version. The man fell off the building while he was praying, so guardian angels took him straight to Heaven. Ahhh!
