Horowitz's Carmen variations in competition?
on: August 15, 2006, 11:29:31 PM
I would like to know what you guys think of playing this in a competition ? I'm definately learning it this year, but I'm entering in a competition where I must play 2 works of my choice. I know one of them will definately be Bowen's toccata. For the second I'm still hesitating. I guess the carmen variations could be good for competition but I'm not sure ... since this would be my first competition  ;D And by the way, I hate the version I have of the variations (the sheet music). Anybody could upload the version Horowitz played on the famous video, or Valentina Lisitsa's version? Thanks.

Horowitz played the 1968 version, Lisitsa played a combination of the 1968 version, the extras/ending of the "White House" version, and improvised some of the end and a little after the beginning.

I'm not sure about playing that kind of piece in competition: first the jury will tag you as lacking depth in choice of repertoire and you put yourself at risk of a catastrophy with such  a virtuosic piece.
