Help Rachmaninov Prelude op 23 no. 5
on: January 08, 2004, 11:39:37 AM
The middle, 16-bar part of this prelude has a very romantic left hand, travelling up and down the keyboard.
I know of only one version (edition Bowsey & Hawkes) which has no fingering.
Any advice as to the left hand fingering or another print version with fingerings? Thank you so much,

hi - try this one -5 2 1 5 3 2 up and then 1 2 3 5 1 2 down - fourth bar into the segment changes a bit when I do 5 1 5 4 3 2 - or whatever is comfortable to you - I think that the key to a flowing fingering in this passage is using 5 over and under.

Hi - Thanks for this. I used to 5-2-1-2-1-2 and reverse but my 1 and 2 end up running after eachother and I kew it was wrong somehow. Now, I assume you pass 5 above 1 going from left to right and 5 below 1 on the way back?

:)exactly so - it just takes a bit of getting used to - ie passing 5 under and over 1...it's a pretty amazing piece hey? so big and dramatic at beginning and end and that beautiful lyrical passage in the middle - good luck with it
