Is Khatchaturian underperformed?
on: September 02, 2006, 11:59:51 AM
Is he?

Seriously, the only pieces by him which are commenly performed now is, well, like Sabre Dance and Masquerade, or something. I seriously think he deserves more credit. >:(

Well, although I like Khatchaturian a lot, I think his piano solo repertoire is quite small, and not all of it is interresting. The sonata is great though.
The piano concerto is also wonderful (but for something even better, listen to Oistrakhs recording of the violin concerto with Khachaturian conducting - AMAZING!).

Khachaturian, on the whole, is underperformed. However, his two most popular works- the Sabre Dance and the Tocatta- are both overplayed.

He is like many smaller composers in that he is known well for 1 or 2 works, but the rest of his stuff is relatively unknown.

By Sonata, do you mean his Sonatine?  In C major?
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

No. The sonatine is fun, but nothing extraoridinary. The Sonata is a quite large work:
Allegro Vivace - 7.54 minutes
Andante Tranquillo - 13.40 minutes
Allegro Assai - 9.24 minutes

The timings are from "Khachaturian - Piano Music (Murray McLachlan)". MacLachlan plays it very good from a technical standpoint, but he is simply to calm, instead of furious and exiting, wich is what I am looking for in this work(very good playing non the less). His 2nd mwt is very beautifull tough. This is the only recording of the Sonata that I am aware of. But I was lucky enough to see me last piano-teacher play the piano concerto and the piano sonata live. His performance was furious and exiting to say the least.

I've performed his trio for clarinett violin and piano. Its not the best piece I must add, its fun to play, but the music is not great. It just doesn't seem to have anything to it, some of it is great, but some is just rubbish. It's very repetitive, and he never develops the ideas, on the whole it just seems a bit random. I'm not a fan of the piano concerto either, its just a bit...I dunno, I just don't like it, its interesting upon first hearing, but after that its just a bit boring.

I ran into the Khatacturian Sonata the other day, and was like wow, I didn't know that it even existed. Does someone have a recording of it or anything, b/c i'm cosidering to play it. So far, the work sounds like a blues/jazz influence type piece like Barber excursions.

And ditto, his Toccata is over played, however his Sonatina and Ivan is Busy set has a modest place in the intermediate piano repertoire world.
