Pedal Function-damper adjustment?
on: January 10, 2004, 07:06:13 AM
I bought a new Charles Walter piano 18 months ago.  It's a thing of beauty.  It has one flukey thing, though...the damper pedal doesn't seem to work properly, although it seems better in the higher octaves.  (No, I'm not using the middle pedal, but it sort of functions that way.)  The piano tuner who's been out a couple of times says it's fine, but he is paid by the store and I'm not sure he's being completely honest with me.  I know it feels odd to me (20 yrs+playing, but no training) and at least two guest players have mentioned it to me unsolicited.  So, does anyone know if it's possible to adjust a damper pedal?  Any thoughts?
Thank you!

Yes, you can get the damper pedal and dampers adjusted.  Sounds like you might need to find a new tuner.  If it's been "flukey" since you got the piano, then the store that sold it to you ought to cover it.

Assuming you are talking about an upright,  open the lid and look at the dampers, slowly press the pedal and see if they lift evenly or are lifting at the treble end first.

If an upright, opening the bottom door there is usually a nut on a screw thread that  holds the pedal.  Move it  a half turn clockwise, check above to see any difference in dampers.
