Sheet Music Question(not a request)
on: September 08, 2006, 10:35:54 PM
My teacher is letting me buy some sheet music for pieces I will learn. I am trying to find a score for Prokofiev's Sonata no.2, but can't find any in nearby stores. I have lost hope in the stores and I am planning of buying sheet music from the internet. I live in Canada, BC, Richmond.
I am basically looking for:
1. A good edition for Prokofiev's Sonatas(preferably the whole set, if, of course, possible)
2. A good website which sells these sheet music(fast, reasonably priced and has a lot of editions to choose from)
-OR-
A music shop in BC, richmond(or somewhere near in vancouver) that has a lot of sheet music and might possibly have this music in stock.

Help will be appreciated.

It's difficult these days to get the Prokofiev sonatas.  The scores I have for the later sonatas I had to buy in Germany.  In Amerika, we are having troubles with the GATT Treaty, which extended the copyrights of Russian composers.  This is from sheetmusicarchive.com:

" Also, ironically, most Russian sheet music editions published before
1973 are in the public domain. However, under terms of the 1996
GATT treaty, some Russian editions that were once in public domain
have had their copyrights restored! The more notable examples of this are
Shostakovich and Prokofiev editions published in the 1960s. There
is an American company called Dover Publications, Inc., which reprints
public domain sheet music editions. It used to publish reprints of
1950s/1960s Russian editions of Prokofiev's Sonatas and shorter piano
works, and Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues for piano. But since
the recent GATT treaty the editions went back into copyright, even though
they were once public domain, and now Dover has discontinued
republication of these editions."

When I bought my Dover edition of Shostakovich Preludes & Fugues, the only reason it was in the store was because when they heard it was to be discontinued, they bought as many copies as they could to have it on stock.  These days you are lucky if you find that edition in a used bookstore.  Dover seems to have printed way too many Prokofiev Sonatas nos.1-4 and seems to always have them on stock.  You can buy them at,

www.doverpublications.com

Thanks... I'll probably buy the one at the website... but do you have any idea how long it takes from Us to Canada delivery? If it takes like 2 months, I'd rather get it from Tom Lee, a music shop in Richmond.
Edit: never mind... I found out >__> But how come the shipping is insanely expensive? ;_; Oh well I'd rather pay extra than wait for 2 months for something I need right away.

.____.;; My music shop must find it very funny... Now they tell me that they cannot order in Debussy's Estampes, and will have to special order it, which will take 2 months. Any ideas at all where to find it? If they tell me they cannot find Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies, I'm never going back there again.

Why dont you phone the Long and McQuade store out there.  I live in Saskatchewan, and when I cant find something I always phone out to vancouver and they have it.  If they dont have it they will order it for you.

Hm... I was also thinking about that place. I just looked at the yellow pages, and found that shop. I was told by my teacher about a place called Ward's(or ward) music, and I think this may be the new name... I'll go phone them in a sec. Thanks for the suggestion :P

The best place I've found to order music from is www.burtnco.com. The only problem is that it's in New Jersey, so shipping fees might be pretty high to get it out to you. And I know from experience, there's nothing more discouraging than paying more for shipping than you did for the music...

The shipment for a $5.99 book is $10(not on that site, but some others)... ;_; If I'm gonna buy from the internet, I would probably buy around 5 books at once. My teacher told me not to go buy from the internet. He told me to just let the store order... There goes my problem. I'm kinda hoping they already have it in stock so I don't have to wait any longer. IT's a 40 minute drive to the shop, so I'd better call them first before going so I don't waste my time going to a place that doesn't even have the book I need.
