Well....
We all know that William Kapell was addicted to cigarettes... [or "durries" as they are known down under.
Personally, I know many pianists and musicians who are addicted to WINE.
...and some who think that smoking improves PERFORMANCE.
This latter group largely agrees that Marlboro lights are the way to go.. although one world famous pianist told me that he tends his pot plant with care.
Ive known pianists who immediately reward practice with beer; some who require a triple vodka to get started; Rach apparently wouldn't play without a shot of something; and most of these employ "mental practice" while chain-smoking... some are even addicted to Piano Forum.
So i put the question out there...
WHAT IS YOUR ADDICTION ??

I was addicted to trivia... lol   I used to spend all night playing trivia on the internet (in romanian, of course)... and since i'm a piano player i type very fast... which made it even more addicting. However, there's no inspiration in there

Now that I look at it, I am pretty twisted upstairs. Cool.

how terrible!  what an obstructive attitude!  how could you ever possibly learn from someone better than you if you're trying to destroy them?

i must say my addiction is probably...i have three:
1) piano, first and foremost, followed by
2) useless trivia (the naked unaided human eye can see for 88km on earth) and lastly,
3) word puns and other obscure humour no one else laughs at.  things like: "when i was a teenager, oh...about, teenaged, i..."  see, you're expecting him to say a number, but he just says teenaged again!  ha ha ha!

i learn everything I possibly can from someone then progress farther than that person. I have respect for my teacher and I live with her being better than I. Other students on the other hand I don't deal with too much.

My addictions?  You know, the standard kind:  LSD, pot, crack cocaine, ecstacy, ruffies, huffing paint thinner, birth control pills (you know, for chewing on when I'm out of paint thinner), tobacco gum, Elmers glue...  way too many to list.

But really, I don't have any addictions related to the piano.

I'm really, quite addicted to the piano.  I have skipped family vacations in the past so I can stay home and maintain a repertoire.  I feel like I am going to forget a piece of music whenever I leave the house.  seriously, there are times when I wish I had gotten into soccer, or something instead.  Without my piano, I would sit around in a chair all day staring at the wall,..memorizing newspaper articles,...or somthing pathetic like that..

im addicted to my personal CD player....it's got great battery conservation so when im not practicing, im stuffing my head full with all the music im gonna play someday

I do like to smoke a bit 'a weed now and then. It is quite accepted here, in moderation, by people from all walks of life. It seems to help with artistic impression, though best avoided when learning pieces.

I gave up smoking tobacco and drinking some time ago, which allowed me to be much more physically active, and get into great shape. Renewed energy levels and more confidence in my appearance gave my performance and attitude a great boost.

I'm afraid I don't have any strikingly peculiar addictions.

I did blow out one of the speakers in my car playing Rachmaininoff's second piano concerto, though. I play classical as loud as my junky car speakers will allow, with the windows rolled down, in any weather. Rain, snow, icy rain, rainy ice, meteors... it's all good with Brahms playing. I also nearly got frostbite on my face for doing this when it was about -15 degrees C outside, but it's worth it.

Why??
You don't get any better sound by rolling down your windows... instead you get to hear only the high pitch notes... and of course, blow out your speakers.

My recent addiction is practicing short 30 minute intervals throughout the day (spring break here) about five times a day (some days). I make such better progress this way! Now I have to go back to school tomorrow. GRRR....

i tried several times to play after smoking a lot of pot and that's awfully difficult, same thing with alcool.
But sincerly, one or two shots of pure vodka before playing is quite nice, i  enjoyed it each time.
anyways i usually never drunk before playing, because i live  at my parent's home and i bet they won't appreciate it that much.

my teacher, whose teacher was a friend of Ravel and Samson Francois told me that Mister Francois could'nt play his concerts without beeing a little drunk.
