Leeds Piano Competition broadcasts
on: September 17, 2006, 09:46:00 PM
I've just got home after being at the first day of semi finals of the LIPC, and boy do I feel inferior! My insecurities apart it was fabulous, in particular a 20-yr-old Russian called Denis Kozhukhin - he played a programme of Chopin, Szymanowski, Britten, Prokofiev and finished off with Rachmaninov preludes, he was briliant, got a well-deserved standing ovation. And for anyone that's interested in such things, he's also tall, blond, handsome and built like a ballet dancer. Phwoar, frankly... I'm going to be most upset if he's not in the final!

Anyway, for those who are interested, highlights of the semi finals are on Radio 3 on Thursday evening, you can even listen online at https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/performanceon3/pip/l1scg/, and then the concerto finals are being broadcast live next weekend on radio 3 and on the TV every night the following week on BBC4. Well worth tuning in to. The aforementioned Russian, if he gets through, will be playing Rach 2...

Time to get some blank tapes i feel.

It is a shame that a competition like this is demoted to BBC4. It used to be on BBC2.

I remember one year when 5 out of the 6 finalists played the Schuman Concerto.

The Brahms concertos may have a strong showing this year depending who gets through... The list of possibilities is listed here https://www.leedspiano.com/repert.html

I agree about BBC2/4, but I suppose it's the same reasoning as the proms getting demoted, the Eastenders brigade will whinge. They aren't even showing the final concerts properly, instead they're showing one concerto each night for six nights, allegedly the viewing audience will enjoy them more that way.

However, if you do watch, keep your eyes peeled for me if the camera pans round on the audience as I'll be at the concerts, I can't wait!

Unless you are wearing a T shirt saying "Hello Thal its Elspeth" i have little chance of recognising you.

no.  my shortest was this:   .

i've looked all over the place for broadcasting in the usa of the leeds international piano competition.  what are they going to do?  broadcast it in december.  i'd rather watch this than the evening news.  i don't think it's on tuesday at 7 pm like yours.  but, when IS it on?  is our BBC meaningless in terms of this 0r is it probably programmed into PBS and a special that is upcoming?

wear red.

Unfortunately I can't fulfil either request, I'll be wearing black - being staff and usually working in theatres rather than concert halls, all my formal clothes are black so I can loom at people out of the dark and threaten them when they're not behaving... woe betide anybody who starts coughing during the concerts... I'm busy picketing to get to work in the area of seating behind the orchestra, the acoustic's not the best but you can sit and look over the orchestra right over the pianist's shoulder. Best view in the hall.

Pianistimo, you should be able to listen to the concerts on the Radio 3 webpage, they have a 'listen again' thing that'll get round time differences and so on. Don't know what they're playing at, not showing it till December over the pond, doesn't make any sense...
