Right Hand Alone Pieces
on: October 05, 2006, 06:46:17 AM
do you guys know of any? i can only think of one off the top of my head, which is alkan's op 76 no 2. there have got to be more pieces out there, whether theyre classical, modern, or anything in between. i must find more. i already know of tons of left hand pieces, should my right hand get permanently injured or something. what if i lost my left hand though? would you be prepared? this is partly what this thread is for.

Some of the Godowsky left hand studies CAN be played right hand alone with very clever fingering, and they would be even more difficult for the right hand because of the uppervoice/outer finger bias.

Aside from what's mentioned there is sadly very few.

Actually, the most important work for 'right hand alone' other than the aforementioned Alkan work of Chopin's 10/2..
Although it's not for right hand alone, the right hand is very innovative in that it does 2 completely different things at ones, it has 2 primary melodies, an accompinament, indeed.

I'd compose for it.

sure, you may be able to play some pieces for left hand only with the right hand, but thats not what theyre designed for. they dont match the anatomy of the right hand, if you know what i mean.

I do know what you mean, but it can be done, and it's very difficult; lots of crossing fingers 3/4/5, and again - this just shows again how revolutionary the Chopin original 10/2 was in expanding the technical possibilities of the right hand.

I was thinking about the same thing. I'd be suicidal if I couldn't play piano anymore.

Totally relate.  When I messed up my left hand (and I waited a year before I went to the doctor; and then only because my thumb and index finger had locked and I couldn't move them at all) I got really, really depressed -- to the point where I pretty much just stopped functioning.

My partner suggested that I arrange some music for the right hand alone; so I started looking around and soon -- I was off to the races, writing my own transcriptions of some of the Chopin Etudes, transcribing music written for the violin, viola and cello, transcribing Schumann -- and that broke the depression!
