Help me! misc. fingering questions
on: January 22, 2004, 03:07:59 AM
My objective: Bach WTC Bb-minor fugue book I, complete legato throughout (ex. repeated notes), no pedal.
Using thumb glissandos, substitutions, exchanging parts between hands &c. I can figure most of it out... except for certain impossible places, for example, last beat measure 12... no physical way to sustain the Bb in LH, what should I do with these things, should I use the middle pedal or something? Is there some genius fingering that I have missed?
On another note, what kind of fingerings do you use on the second page of the Hammerklavier first movement, the eighth notes passage? I am tried to minimize akwardness there. Also, in the fugue what do you do with the double tenths, those of you who can't reach a tenth as written? How do you get the articulation on that note? Do you arpeggiate the interval, could that work?
Thanks!

I hate to say it, but there is no way to sustain the Bb without using pedal, unless you have moster hands. I wouldn't consider it inapropriate to let off the Bb just in time to hit the Db with 2. I wouldn't use the middle pedal if it's full sostenuto because it will sustain the higher octave Bb. I know that some pianos have the middle pedal that sustains the lower half of the keyboard only. If you have this and it will not keep sounding the higher octave Bb, you could probably use it.

Regarding the Hammerklavier, I've found that the edition at [https://sheetmusicarchive.net] has plenty of fingerings written out, and I really like the fingering decisions.
I inquired as to whose fingerings they are, and I was told "it is a C.F. Peters edition from the early 20th century, maybe edited by arthur schnabel." (But I don't think they're Schnabel's fingerings because they don't match other Sonatas I have that I know are Schnabel.)
