A lot of pronunciation questions
on: January 23, 2004, 12:47:41 AM
I always feel stupid saying some music words to people...  My only association with piano is through my teacher, books, and this forum.  And my teachers english is horrible, often I can't even make out what she's saying.  So if anyone could help me out with proper pronunciations for some words it would be appreciated!

- posthumous
- ballade
- scherzo
- PPP (after 2 would it be pianississimo?  etc... etc... that just sounds stupid)
- FFF
- appoggiatura
- pathetique
- Mikrokosmos
- Perahia (as in murray perahia)
- Horowitz (i never questioned this one but I heard someone say his name on the radio and he said it weird...)
- Hemiola

I'm sure theres more but this is all I can think of at the moment.

Why don't you tell us what you think they are pronounced like, and we will correct the wrong ones (as well as get a good laugh at your expense ;) only joking!),

For the improper nouns, you can simply look in any dictionary (for example, posthumous [POSS-chuh-muss])
But here are some any-who:

Ballade: buh-LAWD
scherzo: SCARE-tzo
yes, you simply add issississimos until you reach the dynamic level that either makes the audience lean in or that blows off the roof.
Hemiola: hem-ee-OH-luh
