Non-classical music
on: January 25, 2004, 11:04:11 AM
Hello all.
I wanted to find out what non-classical music everybody liked (hence the name), so I created this amazing and fresh new topic.

Some of my favorite bands are:
Scholomance
Agalloch
At the Gates
Borknagar
Poison the Well
Glassjaw
Deftones
Osker
Walls of Jericho
Kalmah
Shadows Fall
Dashboard Confessional

Some jazz can be nice.  For example, Misty is an interesting piece.  Also, it may sound rather odd, but I kind of enjoy the sounds of middle-eastern traditional music.  That would be interesting to transcribe onto a piano, although I don't think it's literally possible.  They use a completely different system of notes.

Do you mean Klezmer music or more Arabic styles? I too like jazz,
Ed

More Arabic styles, I suppose.  It's actually an Iranian (perhaps its Persian in style, then) radio station on the internet that plays music that I find interesting.  I don't know exactly how to classify the music, I just enjoy it.

mmm.. sitar

i like indian music. i've got an mp3 of one of the pieces phillip glass did with ravi shankar, it's pretty cool.

also, i have a thing for japanese music (like, "popular", not ancient/traditional, although that stuff is good too - like, kabuki theatre music or whatever)

basement jaxx i like a lot, and aphex twin (although i have only heard one song by them), and recently i've been hearing more stuff by outkast, which i enjoy

chick corea's one of my favourite jazz artists

I like some metal too, but I tend to go for the more intricate and experimental stuff.

its interesting that alot of piano players are closet metal fans, i had a dream where i met hamelin and he told me he was a fan of gwar. i have never even heard their music, strange. im a fan of virtually every kind of music - rock, pop, jazz, country, world music, and i even have a penchant for porn sountracks- due to the frequent exposure i have to them.

I like metal because when you play it on guitar and play it up to tempo, your hands can fly!  Check out Raining Blood by slayer and listen to the crazy part, it gives killer piano chops as well as guitar chops!  (You play 16th notes at about 220 bpm).  Or playing a Vai solo is like trying to learn a litz etude!

I love things like Sonic Youth, Ornette Coleman, Slint, Butthole Surfers, Naked City and Manic Street Preachers.

I don't go for heavy metal much (except for Brujeria) but I can totally understand why people who like classical music are fans.

My favourite band is a two-person, all-music Japanese band called "SENS":
https://www.sens-company.com/
They produce some of the most soothing, easy-listening music. My favourite album from SENS is "Heaven's Song":

I have the complete piano score for this album.
Track 1: Choice of Gentleness and
Track 6: Like the Wind ~ Main Theme
often bring tears.

ok i think we need some translation here :

'all music' means 'instrumental'

'easy listening' means 'god-awful'

just trying to clear things up  ;)

Ok, 'all-music' meant 'non-vocal' (or 'instrumental' as you'd put it);
'easy-listening' meant 'god-awfully pleasing'.
