Any Steinway Experts Out There?
on: November 02, 2006, 02:13:51 PM
Hi. I was just given my in-laws Steinway & Sons piano. It needs a little work and I'm still waiting to hear back from a local Steinway tech who was highly recommended to let me know just just what needs to be done to make the piano more playable. Anyway, I'm trying to solve a little mystery (at least a mystery to ME) and I was hoping that someone on this forum could help.

The piano has a serial # that indicates that it is a 1907 grand (I got that info from Steinway's web site). Just above the serial number on the piano, it indicates that it is a Model L; however, I have read that Model L pianos were not produced by Steinway until 1923. Can anyone shed any light on this apparent contradiction? Thanks so much for any help that you can provide!

Try posting that question here also: https://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?/forum/3.html

There may be some Techs there who can give you an authoritive answer.

I think you are right about the model L being post 1923, so I would tend to think you either did not look at the serial number, or the serial number records are incorrect.  A piano that size in 1907 would have been a model O, I think.

POssibly the number you are looking at is the plate number, and not the serial number.  Are there any numbers in the keybed?

I bet this is a lovely piano.  Model O and model C are the only Steinways I like.
Money does not make happiness, but it can buy you a piano.  :)
