Ginastera "Danza del Gaucho Matrero"
on: November 12, 2006, 06:59:50 AM
Hi everyone. This year is my senior year in high school and I will be applying to colleges soon. I am thinking about sending in a supplement along with the application. The supplement is 2-3 pieces, a total of 15 minutes. I am thinking of sending the mov.1 of the tempest sonata or Ballade no.1, and the third dance from Ginastera's Argentinian dances. I've recorded the Ginastera. I recorded on a Yamaha upright; wish I had a grand. Anyways, what do you think?

This is my first time hearing this piece. Your playing is very rhythmic - I like it. Good job, man.

I think it's very slow and monochromatic. Your accuarcy and precision are excellent, but this seems earthbound under your fingers, there is no sense of velocity; this is a "dance" (stylized), but there is no dance groove in your playing. Your tempo is about dotted quarter note = 116; Ginastera indicates dqn= 152, AND "Furiosamente ritmico e energico" . You have the ritmico (in slow motion) now we need the "furiosamente e energico". Since you have the notes down very securely and accurately, it's time to jack up the speed and fury levels before your current interpretation becomes so ingrained that you can't change it.
"Matrero" means "maurader" or in this case probably "maurading". Dictionary.com tells us it means
1. to roam or go around in quest of plunder; make a raid for booty: Freebooters were marauding all across the territory.
–verb (used with object)
—Synonyms 1, 2. invade, attack; ravage, harry.
I would like to hear more of the above definition in your playing; Ginstera didn't call this "Danza del Gaucho Dulce"
I think this is very well prepared, now you need to take it to the next level, musically and interpretively; keep up the good work!
