First Concerto

I can play comfortably at LRSM level... i dont feel like listing all the stuff I can play

I don't care about how overplayed the concerto is, I just want a good entry point... romantic and up, I'm not much into mozart/beethoven concertos    

Grieg or Ravel?  Are those too 'advanced' in concerto rep... cuz I honestly have NO idea

The Concertino of Jean Francaix is a spirited work.  The Shostakovich #1 is exciting too.  If you want something romantic the Mendelssohn G minor is a good choice.

What is the equivalent of LRSM to the RCM system of canada, because I have no idea. Is it hte same as ARCT? I am taking ARCT, and am also taking the Ravel Concerto. It's a pain in the ass to learn, really. But it's fun to play. I would recommend it if your technique is capable of playing it. It is rather irritating to memorize though.

I'm actually doin my ARCT this summer, it's just that more ppl on this forum are familiar with the ABRSM syllabus... ARCT covers anything pretty much from Dip ABRSM to FRSM... LRSM is in between... in other words, I'm able to learn pretty much anything in ARCT, cept the extreme: (late beethoven, gaspard, ligeti etudes, etc..)

why not a rachmaninoff concerto? numbers 1 or 4 would be my picks. number 1 is actually my first concerto.

As overplayed as it is, I believe the Grieg concerto is a good first Romantic concerto. Rach 1 and Rach 2 are also pretty good. However, if you want something less played than that, go for Scriabin.

Methinks that the Prokofiev's 3rd is easy(er) than the average concerto.  It's nice and refreshing, but I sort of ruined it for myself becuse I listened to the 2nd RIGHT before the first time I listened to it.  So it was a big let down.

Looking for Ravel?  Well, he only has two concertos (I think) the G major concerto being one of my favorites, the other one is for left hand.

Interpretation... erm... I would reccomend Zimmerman or Argerich.

i second either ravel concerto, moreso the lefty concerto, which is much easier. i also happen to like it a lot more than that overplayed one in g. for the record, his name is krystian z-i-m-e-r-m-a-n. i all too often see people doubling the letters of his name, whih could get him confused with others, two being bernd alois zimmermann and walter zimmermann. sorry, but spelling is a pet peeve of mine. that aside, zimerman's rec of the ravel lefty is my favorite.

Hah.  Yeah.  Sorry... I suck at spelling names.  Everything else is okay.

Ravel's left hand concerto is probobly one of his better works, I agree it's probobly a better peice than the G major.  I just think that for a FIRST concerto, it should be for both hands.  (Why?  I don't know.)

Prokofiev 3 ("easy?")  Did I read that correctly??  No.  It's as hard as things get.  Period.

Greig? (It may be hackneyed, but it's harder than hell in places!)

FORGET Brahms.  Either one.

Take a look at the Schumann.  You could manage technically the first two moments without much sweat.  The last mvt. is dicey, but do-able.  It requires advanced musicianship to do it justice, however.  A great, great piece of music.

I agree totally with cmg.

Prokofiev 3 is bloody hard.
Brahms are insane.
Rachmaninoff are all hard, but they are good fun.
Liszt concerto's are actually not that hard in comparison to the sonata, but they are hard. They are short as well.

I would reccomend Shostakovich 1 or 2. 1 a lot harder though. Schumann. But I would say Ravel is the best to start with. You will learn a lot from ravel.

Don't do Brahms.  they require a lot of maturity to pull off.
Same goes with Rachmaninoff (at least for a first concerto)
Prokofiev 3 IS bloody hard, but definitely doable for a student.
Liszt is good.

But all of the above are warhorses and should NOT be played as first concerto.

Any Mozart, Beethoven 1, or Haydn D major are usually people's first concerti.
However, since this is your first (LRSM and haven't learned a concerto yet?), you could probably be able to pull off many concerti harder than the 3 I justed mentioned.  Try Grieg, Ravel, Beethoven 3, Mendelssohn 1, Schumann, Saint-Saens 2, Prokofiev 1, or Liszt 1.
